Roger's work is anything if not mysterious. It requires the complete attention of the viewer, and often, his images morph into mirages and puzzles even as we gaze on them. This digital collection is a small sample of the intimate drama, dazzling detail, and sobering surprises that came from the careful hand of Roger Anliker.
"...requires our full attention to fully discern what, precisely, is going on beneath the points and drops of color, the dark sea of purple and black. Most recognizable is the pale sylphlike form of the mermaid, caught in midflip as she turns in fear and swims quickly away...But if we look closer, just above her, a shadow emerges: fingers, head, torso, legs, wings–Icarus falling from the sky into the sea, his wax wings having melted from flying too close to the sun. We hover somewhere in between, part of both sky and water, suspended in the story. Meaning in these paintings [Eye of a Dragonfly] is elusive; Anliker was fond of remarking, 'How it looks IS what it means.' We are presented with mysteries whose meanings only we can decipher for ourselves–myths for the modern world, perhaps, constructed upon the stories and legends that form the fabric of our cultural past."
