How Did Roger Think? Lessons from a Gouache Master | June 24, 9am-3pm 2023

Instructor: Dale Roberts

Ages: 18+

Price: $135


This workshop will expand upon the classroom atmosphere Roger would have cultivated. Designed by a team of his former students and led by Dale Roberts, this six-hour exploration will be directly born from Roger's challenges to his former students, as well as his notebooks, which will be on view. The workshop will uniquely utilize direct observation of a still-life akin to one Roger would have set for his students. Participants should be prepared to investigate the qualities of two mediums Roger was proficient in, gouache and metalpoint. 


Recommended Materials: 

- illustration board or watercolor paper

- a set of gouache paints. Recommended colors: Titanium white, cadmium yellow, cadmium red, alizarin crimson, burnt sienna, ultramarine blue, cerulean blue, chromium oxide green, veridian, lamp black. 

- watercolor palette 

- watercolor brushes

- sandpaper

- razor blades

- paper towels

- squirt bottle

- water container 

- masking or painting tape 

- a backing to tape illustration board/watercolor paper down to, to prevent curling. 

- any references: from photos to sketchbooks

- various pencils and erasers

- mechanical pencil for metalpoint or silverpoint.

- optional: bring distilled water. 

Participants should also bring lunch (30 min lunch break)

Due to popular demand, Dale will be hosting another workshop which will expand upon the previous. However, it is open to all, regardless of whether you could attend the first!
